NBPower turned to LED street lights to save money and reduce the carbon footprint of utility companies, but some citizens complained about the quality of light.
Crown is replacing 72,000 street lights around New Brunswick, an overall project that is expected to cost $30 million.
Riverview was one of the first communities to replace street lights with more efficient new LED units.
Pat Grant, a River-view resident, was not impressed by the new lights.
\"They\'re dark,\" Gallant said.
\"I want a brighter street.
I walk back and forth at 6 a. m. m.
It\'s getting dark. I like safety.
\"So far, more than 17,000 street lamps have been replaced this year, and NB Power expects to replace 22,000 by the end of 2013.
In addition to Riverview, the new lights will be installed in Miramichi, Grand Falls, Fredericton, Diepe, St. Stephen, St. George, St.
Andrews, Shedica and Monckton this year.
Lighting will also be increased between Cadwick and Charo, Grandmanan and Campobello in 2013.
The company hopes to reduce the city\'s energy bills and maintenance costs.
LED lamp-
Compared with the high-pressure sodium lamp replaced every six years, the life of LED lamp is also 20 years.
NB Electric Power Company said that with the emergence of new lighting equipment, it can also save a lot of environmental costs.
Compared with traditional street lamps, the energy consumption of LED lamps is reduced by 50% to 60%.
The company said the new lamp would save about 27 million kilowatt-hours of electricity a year, which is needed to power 1600 households a year.
The street light conversion plan will also reduce NB Power\'s greenhouse gas emissions by 324,000 tons in 20 years.
Despite the advantages of switching to new street lights, NB Power acknowledges that it has received some negative feedback from people in communities where LED lights have been installed.
Jill Doucett, head of NBPower, said the company was working to publicize the change to residents.
\"One may see a change, because the range of light is different from that of high-pressure sodium.
The light is brighter, more efficient and more direct, \"she said.
