A pilot project is being planned to provide automatic traffic signal release for 108 ambulance services.
A section of Poonamallee High Road in the Kancheepuram district is currently looking into whether it is suitable for the pilot project.
Officials at the TNHSP say that if automatic signal clearing becomes a reality, ambulances will no longer need to park unnecessarily at the traffic signal.

According to the new plan, the ambulance will install GPRS equipment, while the controller equipment will be installed in the traffic signal, she said.
"When the ambulance reaches within 100 of the signal, the pilot will turn on the GPRS device.
When the controller device receives the signal from the GPRS device, the traffic signal becomes green and hooter is activated.
We will install owls in traffic signals to alert other road users to make way for them . " She said.
She said the compatibility of the traffic signals for the installation of owls must be studied.
Once the ambulance crosses the signal, the pilot will turn off the GPRS device manually.
