Speaking about the Star Trek program, Professor Hawking said: "The idea behind this innovation is to let the nano-aircraft ride on the beam.
"Such a system can reach Mars in less than an hour, or to Pluto in a few days, through the Voyager in less than a week, to reach the Centauri in just over 20 years.
"The closest star system to the solar system is Alpha Star System 25 trillion miles (4. 37 light years)
But with today's fastest craft, it will take about 30,000 years to get there.
